Helen Evriviades
BSc MSc MIEEM
Helen has been working as a consultant ecologist since 1998, working mainly in the UK, but also abroad. She has a sound understanding of ecological survey methodologies, planning guidance and legislation. She has a wide range of experience in ecological survey, including Phase 1 habitat survey, hedgerow survey and more detailed vegetation surveys (NVC) for certain habitats. Helen also has experience in species surveys including badgers, bats, reptiles, amphibians, dormice and brown hare. She also holds Natural England survey licences for dormice and great crested newts.
Helen is capable of providing high-level advice to clients, presenting clear information to non-ecologists regarding the implications of survey results and taking into consideration nature conservation legislation and planning guidance. She has experience of carrying out Ecological Impact Assessments, following the IEEM guidelines and designing and supervising the implementation of mitigation and compensation measures. Prior to joining Baker Shepherd Gillespie, Helen worked for two large engineering firms, providing ecological advice for all stages of large engineering projects including roads, rail and waterways.
Helen's passion for nature conservation continues her spare time. She is involved in the British Trust for Ornithology's Breeding Bird Survey and undertakes a transect survey of a square kilometre in Wiltshire each year. She is also a member of the Wiltshire Bat and Mammal Groups and is working towards her bat roost visitor licence.
Philippa Harvey
BSc MPhil MIEEM
Philippa is an environmental manager with over sixteen years' ecological experience. Working in the public and voluntary sectors she has developed a broad experience in ecology and environmental management. She has worked in urban conservation for many years and is experienced at working with local communities and site users encouraging their use, appreciation and involvement in their local countryside.
Philippa is experienced in all aspects of land management, in particular site management planning for a wide variety of habitat types, coordination of their implementation, drawing up briefs and specifications, working with contractors, farmers and local community volunteers. In addition, Philippa has considerable experience in advising and assisting landowners in conservation management, habitat creation and funding applications.
Since joining Baker Shepherd Gillespie Philippa has also developed expertise in advising on issues relating to protected species including badger, water vole, great crested newt, white-clawed crayfish and breeding birds.
Guy Miller
BSc MSc MIEEM
Guy has worked as a professional ecologist since 1998. Since joining Baker Shepherd Gillespie in 2004 he has provided specialist advice for a diverse range of projects. These range from co-ordinating, carrying out and reporting a variety of ecological surveys for habitats, birds and a range of protected species, preparing ecological impact assessments, presenting evidence to public inquiry, designing ecological mitigation and preparing site management plans. Guy holds Natural England survey licences for great crested newts and bats. Guy is interested in sustainable design, including the ecological benefits that can be achieved through the use of green roofs and sustainable drainage systems. Guy is also a qualified tree climber.
Prior to joining BSG Guy was a Conservation Ecologist for British Waterways, where he was involved in canal restoration and regeneration projects as well as providing day-to-day advice on many other aspects of waterways ecology. In addition to consultancy, Guy has a background in nature conservation. He managed Gloucestershire's Biodiversity Project, has worked with Natural England on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and has worked in Bermuda as a Conservation Officer.
Guy has also carried out research, in partnership with the RSPB, into pinewood regeneration. His research in partnership with Natural England analysed the costs and effectiveness of implementing the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, particularly in relation to agri-environment schemes.
Sian Mitchell
BSc MSc MIEEM
Sian has more than ten years' experience of conservation, ecological consultancy and project management. She has worked with clients in the private, public and voluntary sectors and has a sound understanding of current planning guidance, legislation and survey and assessment methodologies. Sian has first hand knowledge of the practical issues associated with site management as a result of close involvement with a range of habitat management and restoration projects.
Sian has developed a clear understanding of the implications of current and emerging policy and legislation for major sustainable development and infrastructure projects. She regularly works as part of a large multidisciplinary consultancy team and provides practical and robust ecological advice in relation to large infrastructure projects and urban regeneration. More recently she has advised on developing a carbon neutral approach to regeneration in accordance with Code for Sustainable Homes.
Sian brings excellent project management skills to her work, together with an ability to identify ways in which biodiversity can contribute to project goals. Recent work includes the project management and execution of site assessment, survey coordination, evaluation, impact assessment, mitigation design and reporting, as well as the management of scheme implementation requiring sensitive liaison with interest groups and other specialists involved in the development process.
Along with other senior colleagues Sian shares responsibility for work programming involving the coordination of protected species and habitat surveys undertaken through the Oxford office.
