Bat Survey and Advice

    BSG Ecology provides bat consultancy services to the Youth Hostel Association and National Trust on three important projects at Ilam in Derbyshire’s Peak District. They involved the conservation and refurbishment of Ilam Hall (2008-2010), St Bertram’s Bridge (2008) and Ilam Bunk House (2010-ongoing).

    Park Holidays UK was seeking to re-develop and improve many areas of the Park. However the coastal path, where it lies adjacent to the holiday park, forms an important route for greater horseshoe bats as they commute between their roost at Berry Head to the north east and their foraging grounds to the south of the Park.

    E.ON Climate and Renewables proposes to build and operate an onshore wind farm at Loch Urr, near Moniaive, Dumfries & Galloway. Initial constraints mapping has concluded that the site has the capacity to support in excess of 50 turbines, as well as a substation and ancillary infrastructure.

    BSG Ecology was commissioned to survey a series of derelict farm buildings, known as Totterdown Farm Barns, for signs of bat activity. Our surveys identified a maternity roost of Natterer’s bat, and use of the barn and surrounding land by common and soprano pipistrelle bats. The proposed development would have resulted in damage to the bat roost.
