Brian Armstrong


Brian has worked as a professional ecologist since 2003 and joined BSG Ecology’s Hathersage Office in April 2014.

Brian has experience in undertaking surveys for a range of species and biotic groups, including protected species and botanical work, and regularly undertakes surveys for great crested newts, reptiles and bats. He holds a scientific survey licence for great crested newt and a Natural England survey licence for bats.

Prior to joining BSG Ecology, Brian worked for 10 years as a Local Government Ecologist both in Peterborough and Sheffield. This included delivery of ecological advice on planning and development control matters in relation to protected species, Local Wildlife Sites and nature conservation policy. This included the appraisal of planning applications for major urban extensions, minerals and waste sites, and highways. Through this work Brian has a detailed understanding of the application of wildlife legislation and of survey and planning guidance.

At Sheffield City Council Brian took a lead on the Sheffield Local Wildlife Sites System as well as a number of Nature Conservation Projects including Higher Level Stewardship and Great Crested Newt Conservation through pond creation and restoration in partnership with Froglife.

Brian is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
