Our vision is to be the first choice ecology consultancy and to continue to build our success on rewarding and challenging work. Our focus is on helping our clients achieve their aims, as well as securing the best outcomes for the environment.

Who we are

BSG Ecology is an award-winning independent ecological consultancy. We provide a complete ecology service from baseline survey for habitats and protected species to impact assessment, biodiversity management planning, project design and expert witness advice. We employ a large team of professional ecologists.

The practice was established in 1997 by founding partners with backgrounds in conservation, research and consultancy. Since then it has grown steadily, we now have six offices across the UK. The practice is still ecologist-owned and science-led.

Our experience

BSG Ecology has a wealth of project experience: a portfolio of well over 7,000 projects including major new developments, biodiversity research, local authority support and work for private clients on many protected species. Our key work sectors include residential and commercial development, mineral extraction, infrastructure, renewable energy, utilities and site management.

We are experienced professional ecologists; we have in-house specialists in a range of technical disciplines: birds, bats, botany, invertebrates, great crested newts, reptiles, impact assessment, habitat management, biodiversity action planning and offsetting, green infrastructure and GIS.

Our approach to consultancy

BSG Ecology has a proven record of successfully tackling complex ecological issues on a wide range of projects. Scientific rigour, sound defensible advice, pragmatism, clarity of thought and commercial awareness underpin our approach. We focus on building positive professional relationships and have numerous long-term clients.

We believe that effective consultancy advice needs to have wildlife legislation and policy as its basis. This allows our clients to clearly understand the merits of their options and to better assess their next steps.

We are committed to providing high quality work. We routinely invest in training and research. We operate to our own internal technical standards and peer review process. Our ecologists are bound by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management’s (CIEEM) code of professional conduct.
