Increasing connection with nature: Introducing school children to bats

The discovery of bats whilst undertaking major roof works, and the subsequent supervision (under licence) of work to the buildings by BSG ecologists, generated much excitement amongst the pupils at Shenley Primary School, Greater London.

Keen to learn more, headteacher Kate Fiddler invited BSG Ecology’s Director Peter Shepherd to host an assembly all about the bats resident in the school. The children enjoyed hearing about the life of bats, why it is so important to look after them in the school, and had fun taking part in a pupils vs teachers bat quiz. The assembly provided a perfect opportunity to share knowledge with an enthusiastic audience and increase the children’s connection with nature.

“Having bats at Shenley has been a source of fascination and interest for many of our children and so it was fantastic that you were able to come in and talk to us, sharing your expertise. You have inspired the children to be even more engaged and interested in bats and you never know, we may have the next ‘bat man’ in our midst” Miss Kate Fidler, Headteacher, Shenley Primary School
