Promoting The Profession: John Baker Chartered Ecologist

John Baker, Senior Ecologist, has been awarded Chartered Ecologist status by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

John joined BSG Ecology in 2014 and is one of our most versatile ecologists. He holds a class licence for badger, survey licences for dormouse, barn owl and great crested newt, is highly proficient in the survey of birds, bats, otter and water vole and in the provision of ecological clerk of works support. John’s current and recent projects include numerous residential and coastal leisure schemes, and he also has extensive experience of onshore wind, solar and nuclear development. As a result of his varied experience John has built a very good understanding of the Biodiversity Net Gain, Ecological Impact Assessment and Habitats Regulations Assessment processes.

BSG Ecology now has seven consultants who have been awarded Chartership.

To achieve Chartered Ecologist status the applicant must demonstrate their advice and practice is based on a sound technical understanding of ecology, they work in accordance with high standards of professional conduct and are able to critically evaluate scientific evidence and communicate this to a wide range of audiences. This is tested through a process involving a detailed written application and an interview.

Chartership provides recognition of technical expertise and experience, and requires considerable hard work to achieve, and is a great personal accolade. From a company perspective it should also provide our clients with the confidence that the advice they receive from BSG Ecology will help ensure positive outcomes for their projects.

Congratulations John. A great achievement.
