Promotion of the Profession: Working in Partnership with the Minerals Industry

BSG were delighted to be asked to speak at the Silica and Moulding Sands Association (SAMSA) annual conference. Director Kirsty Kirkham delivered a presentation on how Biodiversity Gain will apply to Minerals sites. The talk focused on how biodiversity solutions can be found including innovative ways of making the Metric work for the industry.

Kirsty is an active member of the Minerals Product Association (of which SAMSA is a constituent body) and their Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Group, working with them at a national level to help the minerals industry get ready for delivering the mandatory biodiversity gain requirements that will come into force through the Environment Act in 2023.

SAMSA Director Nick Horsley said “Kirsty’s presentation on Biodiversity Gain to this year’s SAMSA conference identified the potential pitfalls the minerals industry faces with the proposed DEFRA/NE Biodiversity metric.  Using real-life case studies Kirsty’s structured analysis will clearly help members address the issue of BNG early on in the development process.  The minerals industry’s contribution to biodiversity over recent decades is recognised and proven and it is important that the proposed metric is not detrimental to this legacy”.
