29 Nov Walthamstow Wetlands wins Landscape Institute Award 2019
We are delighted to announce that the Walthamstow Wetlands project was successful in the ‘Adding Value through Landscape’ category at the 2019 Landscape Awards. BSG Ecology were involved in the project for over seven years, designing the ornithological survey protocol, the results of which were critical to informing the Habitats Regulations Assessment of the proposals and the design of the scheme, and co-ordinating consultation with Natural England. Following consent for the works, we then undertook three years of monitoring of the implementation of the project; a process that demonstrated that the mitigation integrated in the design of the scheme was effective. A project profile detailing our involvement is here: Walthamstow Wetlands: Ornithological Survey, Design Inputs & HRA Support
The Landscape Institute Awards were held at the Troxy Theatre, East London, with the keynote speaker being David Attenborough. Peter Shepherd represented BSG Ecology at the invitation of Kinnear Landscape Architects, who lead the project team.
Peter said. “I am delighted this fantastic project was recognised by the Landscape Institute in what was a competitive award category. A great project that has brought about significant change in the lives of people in east London, which is reflected by the fact that three times the predicted number of people visited the site during the first full year of opening. Adding to what was a great afternoon in a marvellous venue was the joy of listening to Sir David Attenborough speaking about the vital importance of tackling climate change and the ecological crisis we are currently facing. Warnings from a man as respected and considered as Sir David Attenborough need to be heeded, and I would urge all environmental professionals to listen to the speech.”
