Bat Cam Wins CIEEM Best Innovation Award 2022

BSG Ecology is very proud to announce that the camera developed by Principal Ecologist Gareth Lang has won this year’s Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) award for innovation.

Gareth has developed the camera specifically for accurately recording the use of potential roost features on trees by roosting bats. It captures motion-triggered video recordings that include footage from before, during, and after a bat encounter, such that conclusive evidence of bat emergence or re-entry to a potential roost feature is recorded in full. This solves the detection delay problem found with traditional trail cameras. Beta (final testing models) are now in production as a precursor to a plan to commercially manufacture and supply the camera as a tool to inform development, research and conservation projects.

BSG Director Jim Gillespie said, “We have been delighted to support Gareth in the development of the camera. The standard and range of entries was incredibly high this year, and it is huge testimony to Gareth to win the award. We are all thrilled that his technical expertise has been recognised in this way.”
