We are currently looking to bring in new Senior Ecologists and Ecologists to join our UK-wide team. If you are thinking about applying to work for BSG, why not read what our staff say about career progression and why they enjoy working for us ……
Judith Giles | Associate Director
Since joining BSG Ecology as a Senior Ecologist in 2012 I have worked on a range of technically rewarding and genuinely fascinating projects ranging from the restoration of historic parks through to regionally important housing developments. In doing so I have loved being part of an organisation led by ecologists and the difference this makes to the feel and practices of the company.
I was promoted to Principal Ecologist in 2014 at which point I became part of our Senior Management Group and part of the leadership team in our Oxford office. Since then I have had two children, returning to work part time on each occasion. I was invited to join our Business Development and Marketing Group on my first return to work and gained my chartership with CIEEM just weeks after the birth of my second child (I had pushed to get my application done before going on maternity leave). I was delighted to be promoted to Associate Director of the Oxford office in July 2021.
I am immensely privileged to work with such a talented, supportive and friendly group of people, both within Oxford and company wide and I am excited to be part of taking us forward.
Owain Gabb| Director
I joined BSG Ecology in 2010 as a Senior Ecologist and am now one of four company directors. I had sub-contracted complicated bat survey work to BSG in my previous role (at a large multi-disciplinary company), and had found the technical ecological knowledge and creative approach to problem solving of their team very attractive. I am very glad I decided to make the move.
My experience has been that BSG allows you a lot of freedom to progress in the ways you want to. You can remain technically focused or branch out. I have chosen the latter, and over recent years have helped develop the website, the graduate training programme, exciting elements of our research, our business development and marketing strategy, and our wellbeing policy. This has added considerable variation to what I do. I now lead a very capable Welsh team, regularly work and exchange ideas with colleagues in all of our six offices, provide company-wide technical advice on ornithological survey and assessment, and lead on energy sector business development.
Every day continues to bring different challenges, I am always learning, the people are brilliant and I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.
Rachel Taylor | Principal Ecologist
I started work at BSG Ecology as an ecologist in 2013. Opportunities for my development and progression have been identified and supported throughout my time at BSG, and this has helped turn my first consultancy job into a career.
I joined a team of very experienced, welcoming ecologists from whom I learned a lot from very quickly. Early on, I expressed an interest in project and resource management, business development and marketing as well as in ecology. This interest was encouraged and allowed me to develop wider consultancy skills.
Following promotion to Senior Ecologist in 2016, I took on the delivery of more complex projects, managing them from initial enquiry to planning consent and often beyond this. Alongside project work, I was able to contribute to research projects (one of which I presented at the Welsh bat conference), mentor new starters, develop my knowledge of protected species licensing processes, and continue to develop my field skills. I was also given the opportunity to have a direct impact on company-wide business strategies through involvement in the Business Development & Marketing Group.
I was promoted to Principal Ecologist in 2019, six years after I joined the company. As a Principal Ecologist I am involved in strategic decision making at an office and company level, manage complex projects with non-standard outputs, provide support to the BSG team through constructive review process and training programs, and help to deliver cross-office resourcing solutions. I continue to be challenged and develop through new projects, experiences and responsibilities, and importantly I still have an active role in fieldwork.
